The Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries (ALARHOSPS) has made a significant contribution to the educational environment at Ebute-Elefun Senior Secondary School, located in the Sura area of Lagos State. The organization donated an 18-unit toilet facility, designed to serve both students and teachers, aiming to improve hygiene and sanitation standards within the school.
This generous gesture reflects ALARHOSPS’ commitment to enhancing the quality of education and well-being of students by addressing a critical need for adequate sanitation. The new facility will not only promote a cleaner, healthier school environment but also help reduce the risk of health-related issues, enabling students and staff to focus more on their educational pursuits.
During the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, Otunba Nurudeen Ojora, President of the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries (ALARHOSPS), expressed his delight in presenting the new 18-unit toilet facility to Ebute-Elefun Senior Secondary School. He emphasized that the donation was a moment of pride for the organization, reflecting their commitment to supporting education by improving school infrastructure. Ojora noted that the project aimed to create a healthier and more conducive learning environment, ensuring both students and teachers have access to clean and reliable sanitation.
Otunba Nurudeen Ojora explained that the renovation and donation of the 18-unit toilet facility was part of ALARHOSPS’ broader vision to mark their annual celebration week. He shared that this initiative was a meaningful way for the association to give back to the community, showcasing their commitment to making a positive impact on education and public welfare. By addressing a vital need at Ebute-Elefun Senior Secondary School, the group sought to create a lasting legacy that would benefit students and staff for years to come.
He highlighted that the project was part of ALARHOSPS’ ongoing efforts to give back to society. He explained that each year, the association selects a specific division for their community-focused initiatives, and this year, the focus was on the Lagos division, specifically Lagos Island. This commitment to supporting local communities led them to choose Ebute-Elefun Senior Secondary School, where they saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by improving the school’s sanitation facilities.
He posited as follows “We successfully renovated eighteen toilets for the staff and students of the school,” he said. “When we first arrived, the facilities were in a deplorable condition—unhygienic, lacking water, and emitting a foul odor. It was clear that using them posed serious health risks, making it easy for students to contract diseases. Our renovation efforts have transformed these restrooms into clean, functional, and sanitary spaces that are safe for everyone to use.”
He continues”Our group believed this was the best way to support the government, as they can’t handle everything on their own,” he explained. “That’s why we decided to step in and make a difference. Now, it’s crucial for the school management to ensure these facilities are well-maintained, so they continue to benefit everyone.”
“If properly maintained, these toilets can serve the school for up to twenty years,” he remarked. “Good upkeep will ensure they continue to benefit staff and students alike. When I was a student, I personally cleaned the school toilets, so I understand the importance of proper hygiene. Our group, which was founded eleven years ago, has undertaken numerous projects across schools in Lagos State, improving facilities and promoting a better learning environment.”
Similarly, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Al-Balogun, praised the group’s efforts, describing their work as a true act of humanitarian service. “I deeply appreciate their dedication,” he said. “Even in retirement, they remain tireless, giving back to society despite their limited income. This is not the only school they have helped; they have undertaken numerous projects across other schools, making a positive impact wherever they can.”
“I believe there is still much to be done,” he added. “Education is a global effort that thrives on partnership and collaboration. The government cannot address all the needs alone, and that’s why contributions like these are invaluable. I want to express my gratitude to the group, and I hope the school will use the monthly support from the government to maintain and take good care of these facilities.”
“ALARHOSPS has served Lagos State with dedication and has been recognized by the government for their efforts,” he remarked. “They are an integral part of the community, and I encourage them to continue their good work. There is surely a reward for their selflessness, both here on earth and beyond.”
Previously, the school struggled with inadequate and poorly maintained toilets, with over 100 students relying on limited, substandard facilities. Thanks to the group’s efforts, they have now brought a new lease on life to both teachers and students, providing clean, functional, and hygienic restrooms that improve the overall school environment.
Mr. Ajibade Olusoga, a member of the group, explained that they chose to renovate the toilets after conducting a needs assessment at the school. “We identified this project as a priority because improving hygiene facilities will greatly benefit the students,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.”
He explained that a committee from the group conducted a thorough inspection of the school and decided to renovate the toilets after witnessing their dilapidated state. “Proper sanitation is essential,” he emphasized. “We all agreed that renovating the toilets was a priority.”
“We renovated a total of eighteen toilets,” he shared. “In the past, we’ve also worked on projects at a school in Epe, collaborating with the institution’s alumni. Additionally, we have supported the first school in Nigeria, located in Badagry. All these projects were funded through contributions from our own members.”
The National President of the Old Students Association of Ebute-Elefun Senior Secondary School, Mr. Wale Salawe, expressed optimism about the new facilities. “These improvements will alleviate the challenges students face when they need to use the restroom,” he stated. “This upgrade is crucial for their comfort and well-being.”
He expressed gratitude on behalf of the alumni, stating, “As former students, we are thrilled to see the involvement of senior citizens in the school community. We sincerely appreciate this project and the positive impact it will have on current students.”
In conclusion however, he said “We are truly delighted that our school was chosen for this initiative,” “We are grateful for the support, as it sets a shining example for both current students and alumni. Your leadership serves as a role model for us, and we will continue to learn from you and emulate your style.”
