The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has committed to implementing a comprehensive security plan to guarantee a peaceful and secure atmosphere for the forthcoming local government elections. This initiative is aimed at supporting the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections across the state.
On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Commandant Maku Olatunde welcomed the newly appointed members of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to the State Command Headquarters in Awka. The delegation, led by the State Chief Electoral Officer and ANSIEC Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, Esq., was on a courtesy visit to discuss upcoming electoral activities. During the meeting, Commandant Olatunde made a firm pledge to support the Commission’s efforts in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across Anambra State.
The NSCDC has declared its readiness to ensure comprehensive security for the upcoming elections. They will deploy personnel to polling stations, collation centers, and other critical locations to maintain safety and order throughout the electoral process.
“Your choice to visit this morning and seek collaboration is very apt.
We will give you maximum support to ensure you carry out your task successfully. We will work closely with other security agencies to protect both sensitive and non sensitive materials of your commission and prevent any form of violence or disruption,” he said.
The NSCDC State Commander emphasized the command’s unwavering dedication to ensuring a secure and peaceful environment during the electoral process, pledging all necessary security support to uphold the integrity of the elections.
“The importance of security in the electoral process cannot be overemphasized. We are ever ready in line with our core mandate of protecting Critical National State and Local Government Assets and infrastructure collaborate with other sister security agencies to protect both human and material assets of your commission before, during and after the elections” he added.
Genevieve Osakwe, Esq., emphasized that the recent visit highlights the Commission’s unwavering dedication to ensuring elections that are credible, peaceful, and transparent. This gesture underscores their commitment to upholding democratic principles and fostering trust in the electoral process.
“Security is a big issue when it comes to election, especially at the grassroots level, that is why we have come to NSCDC as a key stakeholder in this activity to formally seek your partnership in ensuring security in preparation for the forth coming local government elections” she said.
She conveyed her gratitude in advance for the expected support from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and assured the Commandant of ANSIEC’s full cooperation. As the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) gears up to conduct the Local Government Elections, she emphasized the commitment to adhering strictly to the provisions of the Constitution and the Anambra State Electoral Law of 2024.
To cap it all, during the courtesy visit, a distinguished group was in attendance, including Deputy Commandants Steven Ikeorah, Alada Yakubu, Orji Ogbu, and Prominence Ukaobi. Also present were Barrister Osita Igbokwe, the ANSIEC Commissioner for Legal and Security, along with Mrs. Umeh Helen, the ANSIEC Commissioner for Logistics and Operations.
