A staff member working at the zoological garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been injured by a lion. A lion has reportedly injured another OAU staff.
The chairman of the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Universities (NANTSU) OAU, Ile-Ife branch, Wole Odewumi, confirmed this to The Punch on Monday,February 19. Odewumi said details of how the incident happened were not available, but there were insinuations that the deceased had left the cage opened while trying to feed the animal and got seized by the lion.
He, however, confirmed that a veterinary technologist, Olabode Olawuyi, was killed by a lion in the OAU zoological garden on Monday. He added that Olawuyi’s death was a loss to the entire OAU community. He said: “A member of the association also working at the garden reported to me that the incident happened while the deceased was trying to feed the animal. Immediately, I heard of it, I contacted other people on campus. It is true that another staff also got injured.”
How lion killed OAU zookeeper Legit.ng earlier reported that Olawuyi was killed by a 9-year-old lion in the zoological garden of the institution. A statement by the university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident. The statement said Olawuyi, until his death, was a veterinary technologist who had been in charge of the OAU zoological garden for over a decade.
