CLEAN LAGOS INITIATIVE: LAWMA Expands Motorized Advocacy Campaign To Dopemu-Iyana Ipaja 🎯 The Scoper Media

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has rolled out its “War on Waste” motorized advocacy campaign to the bustling Dopemu-Iyana Ipaja area as part of its statewide drive for a cleaner Lagos. This initiative is designed to inspire a shift in mindset among residents, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility. LAWMA’s mobile units, equipped with vibrant displays and educational materials, are set to engage the community directly, urging them to embrace waste reduction and proper disposal practices. This proactive campaign aligns with LAWMA’s broader mission to cultivate sustainable cleanliness across Lagos, ensuring that every neighborhood plays a part in keeping the city pristine.

According to a press statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, LAWMA, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, it states that following a successful roadshow across the Lekki Toll Gate, Jakande, and Ajah in Eti-Osa Local Government, LAWMA’s “War on Waste” campaign now heads to Dopemu-Iyana Ipaja. This ongoing initiative aims to directly engage communities across Lagos, reinforcing the message of environmental stewardship and rallying residents to adopt cleaner habits. With each stop, LAWMA continues its mission to inspire a city-wide commitment to sustainable waste management, transforming neighborhoods one community at a time.

At Dopemu Roundabout near Santos Estate along Akowonjo Road, Egbeda, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Mr. Adewumi Adetona, director of the advocacy unit, emphasized the critical goals behind the “War on Waste” campaign. He explained that this initiative is a bold effort to address key waste challenges in Lagos, particularly indiscriminate dumping, the lack of engagement with PSP operators, and improper waste containerization practices. Through this campaign, LAWMA seeks to drive home the importance of responsible waste management across the state, urging communities to take an active role in keeping Lagos clean.

He postulated as thus: “With over 20 million residents, Lagos generates 13,000 metric tonnes of waste on a daily basis. The Authority bears the brunt of evacuating much of the waste on road median, streets, canals and drainage channels  everyday. However, it is not sustainable for us as an agency, to continue with the same task without sensitizing you on your role in the waste management chain. That is why we have come up with this intervention. Our Advocacy Unit has always been on the move to enlighten residents, traders and communities. This is the second public roadshow we are having and the goal is to ensure the message of sustainable waste management practices gets to everyone.

“I want to implore you to relay the message to others and spread the gospel of a positive environmental consciousness to everyone around you. Let’s start from our homes by purchasing a waste bin for proper containerization of the waste we generate; separate organic waste from recyclables, patronize assigned PSP operators and pay for waste services promptly. Embrace the opportunities in recycling and start earning an income from your waste.  Should you have any complaints about PSP services, call the Authority’s toll free lines and you will be attended to. Together, we can achieve a cleaner and safer Lagos,’’ he noted.

Similarly, Mrs. Adedoyin Oyefusi, head of marketing and sales for Adopt-a-bin, highlighted the introduction of new smart bins tailored to improve waste management for Lagos residents. She explained that these bins, designed with anti-theft features, can be acquired through flexible installment plans, making them accessible to more households. The smart bins not only enhance the efficiency of waste disposal but also support LAWMA’s broader goals of a cleaner, more sustainable city.

She has this to say “We are dedicated to fostering sustainable waste practices that promote healthier living,” Mrs. Adedoyin Oyefusi stated, emphasizing the importance of LAWMA’s new smart bins in achieving a cleaner Lagos. She explained that the “War on Waste” campaign aims to eliminate reckless waste dumping, urging residents to adopt these bins for responsible disposal. “We encourage everyone to procure these bins and make proper waste disposal a habit,” she stressed, underscoring LAWMA’s commitment to a waste-free Lagos.

On the basis of this however, the campaign team brought energy and inclusivity to Dopemu-Iyana Ipaja, educating residents on proper waste management in English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Pidgin. With songs, dances, and lively interactions, they engaged traders and commuters alike, creating a vibrant and participatory atmosphere. This multilingual outreach emphasized LAWMA’s commitment to reaching every community member, making waste management education accessible to all.

Conclusively, the roadshow culminated at Iyana Ipaja Roundabout, drawing a strong presence from LAWMA’s management, department staff, street sweepers, medical personnel, neighborhood watch, and enforcement teams. The event also saw collaboration with Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials and featured LAWMA ambassador Alhaji Sikiru Ademola Junaid, affectionately known as Lemon. This diverse group underscored a unified commitment to the “War on Waste” campaign, symbolizing community solidarity for a cleaner Lagos.
