In a bid to foster self-improvement and personal growth among students and youths, Hon. Taiwo Oyekan, the Deputy Leader of the Lagos Island Local Government Legislative Arm, took a significant step through his NGO, the Kolawole Ajibade Oyekan Foundation. Collaborating with Union Bank Plc., he organized a dynamic one-day seminar on career
guidance and financial literacy. This event, held as part of the 2023 Free Summer Coaching program, engaged over 100 students, equipping them with valuable insights and skills to better navigate their future educational and financial journeys.

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, St. John’s Primary School in Aroloya, Lagos Island, became a hub of inspiration as over 100 students gathered for a one-day Career Talk and Financial Literacy Seminar. Organized by Hon. Taiwo Oyekan, Deputy Leader of the Lagos Island Local Government Legislative Arm, through the Kolawole Ajibade Oyekan Foundation and in partnership with Union Bank Plc., the event aimed to empower youths with essential skills and insights. Part of the 2023 Free Summer Coaching program, the seminar focused on guiding students toward self-development, financial awareness, and future career success.

In his address, Hon. Taiwo Oyekan highlighted the essence of the Human Capital Development Programme, describing it as a strategic initiative to empower summer coaching students. He emphasized that the program serves as a valuable platform for students to set clear goals and objectives, helping them turn their dreams and aspirations into reality. By equipping young minds with the tools to plan and strive for success, the program aims to inspire a new generation of leaders ready to shape their future.

Speaking further, He urged Students and Youths on Lagos Island and the State at large to study hard in order to excel in their academic pursuits.He enjoined them to be Steadfast and Upright at all times.

The Youth Development Advocate also charged the students to cultivate Savings Culture.

While addressing the Students, the Business Development Manager of Union Bank Plc., Balogun Branch, Lagos Island, Mrs. Aderonke Chrales-O’Dwyer said the Bank was poised to teach and guide the Students how to set goals and plan thier career choices.

She however highlighted guidelines to choose a Career. According to her, they include but not limited to: Personal Skills, Self-Assessment and Development, Natural Aptitudes, Areas of Interest and Environmental Factors.

Mrs. Chrales-O’Dwyer urged the students to shun Peer Pressure and Social vices that could dampen their dreams and aspirations. She also enjoined them to concentrate on their studies.

To further inculcate Financial Literacy and Inclusion, Union Bank Plc opened Zero-Balance Savings Accounts for the Students.

Mrs. Charles-O’Dwyer urged the students to embrace a habit of saving and practice wise financial management. She emphasized the importance of developing a savings culture early, encouraging them to make smart financial decisions that would secure their future and help them achieve long-term goals.

In conclusion however, the event saw an impressive turnout, with notable attendees including Hon. Taiwo Oyekan, Executive Director of the Kolawole Ajibade Oyekan Foundation, alongside teachers and officials from Union Bank Plc. Among the Union Bank representatives were Mrs. Aderonke Charles-O’Dwyer, Business Development Manager of the Balogun Branch, and Team Leads Abiodun Atolani and Aishat Mabinuori from Retail Sales. The seminar also welcomed officials from the Foundation, enthusiastic students, and their supportive parents and guardians. Stakeholders, community leaders, and other distinguished guests were present, underscoring the event’s importance and community-wide support.
