Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has urged Lagos residents to prioritize impeccable personal and domestic hygiene, along with responsible waste management practices. This call to action aims to combat the alarming spread of cholera in the region. By adopting these preventative measures, residents can significantly reduce the risk of this dangerous disease, ensuring a healthier and safer community. Dr. Gbadegesin emphasizes that maintaining cleanliness in homes and proper disposal of waste are crucial steps in this collective effort to safeguard public health.

Cholera, a devastating diarrheal disease, is triggered by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. This pathogen flourishes in unclean environments, spreading swiftly through tainted water and food.
He said, “The outbreak of cholera in the state is a serious public health concern. It is imperative that every resident takes proactive measures to prevent further spread of the disease. Ensuring proper personal and domestic hygiene, including efficient waste management, will go a long way in curbing the spread of the fatal disease”.
The head of LAWMA emphasized a series of vital precautionary measures to ensure public health and safety. He highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal, access to safe drinking water, and frequent hand-washing with soap. Additionally, he underscored the necessity of adhering to food safety practices and utilizing appropriate sanitation facilities. These steps, among others, are crucial for maintaining a healthy environment and preventing the spread of diseases.
In a bid to combat the spread of disease and improve waste management, local authorities urged residents to avoid careless trash disposal. They emphasized the importance of using covered bins for bagged waste, ensuring it is properly contained. This practice not only helps prevent disease-carrying pests but also facilitates smoother waste collection by designated PSP operators.
Gbadegesin emphasized the Authority’s unwavering commitment to enhancing waste management across the state, ensuring swift and effective cleanup of notorious black spots through dedicated service providers working tirelessly around the clock. This initiative aims to maintain cleanliness and environmental health throughout the region.
In a heartfelt plea, he urged residents to adopt a simple yet profound habit: washing hands after handling waste. Whether it’s neatly bagging trash or securely placing it in covered bins, he emphasized the importance of aligning with the state’s environmental and health safety guidelines. His appeal resonated with a call to avoid reckless dumping in drains and on road medians, advocating for a cleaner, healthier community.
“We are fully committed to the health and safety of every Lagosian. Our teams are on the ground, ensuring that waste is properly collected and disposed of to minimise health risks. However, we need the cooperation of all residents to maintain a clean and safe environment,” he stressed.
