A consultant nephrologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof Omolara Mabayoje, has revealed that 14 per cent of adults in Lagos are suffering from kidney disease.
She ascribed this to an increase in hypertension and diabetes cases in the country.
Prof Mabayoje said this in Lagos during the commissioning of a 32-bed dialysis centre and renal institute. The structure and equipment of the centre were built and donated by the family of late Lion Isaac Dada to reduce kidney-related medical tourism abroad.
The centre will cater for 1,000 kidney patients monthly initially and increase to 2,000, Prof Mabayoje disclosed.
The centre, which has 32 dialysis machines and 32 beds, is regarded as the largest dialysis centre and nephrology institute in the West African sub-region by the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Dr Chris Bode.
