…calls for responsible waste disposal

As the rainy season looms on the horizon, the diligent efforts of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have come to fruition with the successful revitalization of the Olusosun dumpsite. This ambitious undertaking aims not only to fortify the site but also to streamline waste disposal operations throughout the state, ensuring efficiency and environmental sustainability. With this transformative project complete, LAWMA stands poised to navigate the upcoming challenges of waste management with renewed vigor and dedication, safeguarding the well-being of the community and the integrity of the environment.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the visionary at the helm of LAWMA, revealed in a statement on Thursday, 2nd May 2024, the organization’s proactive measures to enhance operational excellence ahead of the rainy season. Emphasizing a commitment to efficiency, the CEO outlined strategic maintenance initiatives designed to optimize performance and ensure seamless service delivery. With a forward-looking approach, LAWMA is poised to navigate challenges and uphold its mission of environmental stewardship with unwavering dedication.

He said, “Our primary objective in rehabilitating Olusosun dumpsite is to ensure that waste disposal trucks can navigate through the dumpsite seamlessly, even in adverse weather conditions, especially during heavy rainfall when logistical challenges tend to arise”.

Dr. Gbadegesin, with a spark of determination in his eyes, unveiled LAWMA’s latest strategy to revolutionize waste management. Alongside the completion of maintenance tasks, he emphasized a relentless pursuit of operational excellence, aimed at turbocharging the turnaround times of waste disposal trucks. With a touch of optimism, he predicted that the ongoing rehabilitation efforts would slice through queue times like a hot knife through butter, promising a future where waste collection services would be swift, efficient, and seamless.

“Our commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond operational enhancements. We urge residents to join us in prioritising responsible waste disposal practices to safeguard our environment”, he stressed.

More importantly, he emphasized the critical need for responsible waste management practices. Encouraging residents to be vigilant, especially during the rainy season, he underscored the detrimental effects of dumping waste in drains. Such actions not only disrupt the drainage system but also present grave environmental hazards to both livelihoods and properties. Let’s unite in safeguarding our communities by disposing of waste responsibly and ensuring the well-being of our environment for generations to come.

“We encourage residents to patronise accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for their waste disposal needs. By supporting licensed operators, individuals contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for all”, he reiterated.

Similarly, Dr Gbadegesin underscored the pivotal role of Personalized Service Providers (PSPs) in the local waste management ecosystem. Stressing the importance of community engagement, the Director urged residents to embrace their PSPs as key allies in maintaining clean and sustainable neighborhoods.

By forging meaningful connections with their designated PSP operators, residents can not only streamline waste disposal processes but also foster a culture of environmental stewardship within their communities. This collaborative approach promises to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of waste management services, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

“We are committed to facilitating this process by publishing detailed PSP contacts for all areas in the state. This initiative aims to empower residents to take ownership of waste management practices in their neighborhoods, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for all”, he assured.
