The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has ushered in a new cohort of graduate interns for its July internship program. This initiative is designed to cultivate a deeper understanding of waste management among the younger generation, fostering future leaders in environmental stewardship.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, highlighted the crucial role of involving young people in fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos. This initiative is particularly vital as the state confronts a cholera outbreak. By engaging the youth, LAWMA aims to inspire a new generation committed to environmental stewardship and public health.
He said, “Our internship program is designed to equip the younger generation with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective waste management and environmental preservation. At LAWMA, we believe education is key to achieving our aim of entrenching proper waste management as a lifestyle”.
Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted that LAWMA’s hands-on training offers interns an invaluable glimpse into the intricate world of waste management. This immersive experience is designed to equip them with practical skills and a deep understanding of the challenges in the field. By becoming environmental stewards, these interns are poised to inspire positive change and influence others in the pursuit of sustainable practices.
“Our interns will be exposed to various aspects of LAWMA’s operations, from waste collection and disposal to recycling and public education campaigns. With these, they will gain practical insights and develop innovative solutions to waste management issues”, he stated.
Mrs. Bola Adewunmi, the Director of LAWMA Academy’s Training and Development, warmly welcomed the new cohort of graduate interns. She outlined the comprehensive four-week program designed to immerse them in the essentials of waste management. The curriculum blends theoretical lessons, practical sessions, and field visits, providing an in-depth understanding of LAWMA’s diverse operations.
In a recent initiative, the academy has broadened its environmental cleanliness education campaign to include schools in Agege and Ajeromi Ifelodun local government areas. The program educates pupils on essential waste management techniques, recycling, nurturing a positive environmental relationship, and understanding the harmful effects of banned Styrofoam containers
