The LAWMA Academy has wrapped up its 2024 summer school program, a vibrant and engaging initiative dedicated to teaching students the ins and outs of efficient waste management and recycling. This year’s program offered an immersive experience, blending hands-on activities with expert lectures to instill a deep understanding of environmental stewardship. Students not only learned about practical recycling techniques but also explored innovative waste management solutions, empowering them to become proactive environmental advocates.
According to a press statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Kadiri Folashade (Mrs.), it states that at the LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, a dynamic four-week intensive course unfolded, drawing pupils from diverse schools across Lagos State. This immersive program not only engaged students in hands-on learning but also fostered a collaborative environment, bridging educational gaps and sparking a passion for environmental stewardship.
At the event, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, was represented by Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director of Finance. Adebiyi expressed great pride in the remarkable achievements of the participating children. He urged them to take their newly gained insights and apply them in their everyday lives, emphasizing the importance of using their knowledge for practical and meaningful purposes.
He said, “I am thrilled with your performance during this training. I urge you to go out there and share what you have learned with others. You must put these lessons into practice by properly sorting your waste and utilising recycling materials to create useful items.”
He stressed how crucial it was for students to become champions of waste management, encouraging them to lead by example and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices.
“Wherever you find yourselves, remember that you now carry the responsibility of promoting good waste management practices”.
Similarly, Mrs. Bola Adewumi, the esteemed Head of LAWMA Academy, inspired participants with a call to action. She urged them to leverage their newly acquired knowledge to champion sustainable living within their communities. By applying their insights, she emphasized, they have the power to drive meaningful change and foster a more eco-conscious society
The event was marked by a vibrant celebration of excellence, featuring prestigious awards that honored exceptional students from both primary and secondary schools. The ceremony shone a spotlight on the remarkable achievements and dedication of young scholars, each receiving accolades that recognized their hard work and outstanding contributions.
The pupils and August LAWMA Academy interns, collectively known as Team SSS (Sustainable Solution Squad), proudly presented their groundbreaking projects and innovations. These showcased initiatives highlighted their deep understanding of waste management principles and illustrated their potential to instigate meaningful change within their communities.
