LICENSING PAUSE: NCC Halts Issuance Of Fresh Licences For Interconnect Exchange, Others 🎊 The Scoper Media

In a move that sent ripples through the telecommunications sector, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared a temporary freeze on the issuance of new licenses. This decision, communicated to stakeholders, marks a pivotal moment in regulatory dynamics, hinting at potential shifts in the industry’s landscape. With implications for both current and aspiring operators, the suspension prompts speculation about the underlying motives and future directions of Nigeria’s telecommunications policies

In adherence to the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, the NCC has affirmed its authority to issue and renew licenses, foster equitable competition, and advance the telecommunications sector. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, underscored this directive, emphasizing the Commission’s pivotal role in shaping the communications landscape.

The suspension is in the following categories:

1.    Interconnect Exchange Licence

2.    Mobile Virtual Network Operator Licence

3.    Value Added Service Aggregator Licence

In pausing operations temporarily, the Commission aims to delve deep into vital aspects like competition levels, market saturation, and ongoing dynamics. This strategic move allows for a comprehensive review, ensuring a well-informed understanding of the landscape.

It should be noted at this juncture that, as of May 17th, 2024, the gates of license applications shall be temporarily barred. Yet, fear not, for this hiatus shall not cast a shadow upon those already awaiting judgment. Pending applications shall be cradled with care, evaluated on their own merits, and ushered through the gates of consideration. Let patience be our guide as we navigate this brief intermission, for soon the doors shall swing wide open once more, welcoming new endeavors and dreams yet to be realized.
