Kaduna-based journalist, John Femi Adi, who offered to donate his kidney to Sonia Ekweremadu, the ailing daughter of the former deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has said that his decision to do that was not borne out of financial gratification.
John Femi attracted public attention a few weeks ago when he announced that he wanted to donate one of his kidneys to Sonia. He said he was doing this on God’s order to love his neighbours as himself.
He made the announcement after Sonia came out to solicit to members of the public for kidney donation, and also revealed that she was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease in 2019, and that it’s been challenging living with the condition for the past three years.
In a recent interview with The Punch, John Femi Adi who is also a former Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Kaduna Council, said that he is not helping the girl because he is expecting money in return. He said that he is not a poor man, and has several investments that can take care of his family.
He said – “I am a contented human being, who has worked and invested in real estate and farming. At least if I die today, my children have what to fall back on. Paying school fees and feeling will never be a problem. With all sense of humility, I am not poor to the point of donating my kidney to survive or eke out a living. The act is just a cause to help someone in line with the tenets of my faith as a Christian.”
He said that his family members have been worried about him since he made the decision, and that some of them are even worried about him dying in the process. He said that the issue of death should not be brought into this, but the focus should be on the fact that he is trying to save a life. He said that the gesture is from his heart, and that he believes he will go through whatever process safely.
