THE Nollywood industry and the entire nation are in mourning as the body of John ‘Mr Ibu‘ Okafor, one of Nigeria’s most beloved actors, was transported from Lagos to his hometown in Enugu state for his final burial rites on Monday.
Mr Ibu, who was known for his hilarious roles in comedy movies, passed away on Saturday, March 2 at the age of 62. He had been battling with a life-threatening illness for months, which resulted in the amputation of one of his legs.
According to TheCable, A heartbreaking video that has gone viral on social media shows the body of the actor being wheeled out of the morgue by the hospital staff, accompanied by his two sons, Daniel and Valentine Okafor. His wife, who was dressed in all black, could not hold back her tears as she watched her husband’s body being taken away.
The actor had revealed in October last year that he was suffering from a serious ailment that required multiple surgeries. He had received donations from well-wishers and fellow actors to support his treatment. He had returned home in January after spending months in the hospital, but his condition deteriorated a week ago. He was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Evercare Hospital, Lekki, Lagos where he eventually succumbed to a cardiac arrest.
Mr Ibu was widely regarded as one of the most talented and versatile actors in Nollywood. He had starred in over 200 movies, including the popular Mr Ibu series, Police Recruit, Mr Ibu in London, and Keziah. He had also won several awards and accolades for his outstanding performances.
Mr Ibu’s funeral is expected to take place later this week in his hometown, where he will be laid to rest. He is survived by his wife and four children. May his soul rest in peace
