MTN Apologises Over Network Downtime ~ The Scoper Media

-MTN Nigeria Communications Plc (MTN Nigeria), the largest telecommunications service provider in the West Africa county, has apologized to it’s millions of customers affected during Saturday’s downtime.

Investigations show that the network experienced a downtime at about 1600hrs (WAT) as some customers could not successfully make calls on the network.

The cause of the downtime could not be ascertained as at the time of writing this report.

However, a blog post by the network with 68.9 million mobile subscribers as at H1 2021 reads:

“Some of our customers are having difficulty connecting the network today. We are looking into this and are truly sorry for any inconveniences caused”.

MTN’s subscriber base has increased to 77.35 million, according to latest industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

It could be recalled that sometime in year 2020 MTN engineers battled 48hours to resolve connectivity challenges due to fibre cut.

MTN then said that connectivity was interrupted because of “a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe which affected six Operators in six West African Countries and beyond.”

Also, recently Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria said “Maintaining network stability and high levels of customer service remains a key priority for us. In line with MTN Nigeria’s standard practice, this includes communicating to and informing customers of any potential disruptions  in a timely manner, whether due to maintenance on the network, outages due to faults or other circumstances that may pose a risk, enabling them to plan appropriately and put in place business continuity measures.

Toriola, was responding to ‘misleading media coverage’ related to a notice sent to a select group of the enterprise customers on the 15th of June, 2021 about potential service disruptions.

He said that the notice in question was a routine notification to a small group of businesses affected by a specific challenge in very few specific locations.

These notices are regularly distributed to partners and are not out of the ordinary.

“Small, medium and large enterprises are key to driving economic growth in Nigeria, and with the rise of digital solutions, are becoming more reliant on secure and reliable connectivity solutions. We recognize and understand the importance of service availability and strive to deliver a seamless and uninterrupted high-quality network experience, so that they are able to meet their customer’s needs”, he said
