In a vibrant celebration, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) joins consumers and industry stakeholders to mark the 2024 World Telecommunications and Information Society Day. Amidst festivities, they champion connectivity and innovation, fostering a digital future for Nigeria. Together, they embrace the transformative power of telecommunications, shaping a world where communication knows no bounds.
In November 2006, the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference, held in Antalya, Turkey, declared the 17th of May as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Since then, this international day has been celebrated annually, marking a global recognition of the importance of telecommunications and information in our interconnected world.
In the wake of the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis, the United Nations General Assembly declared World Information Society Day, an international celebration aimed at promoting the importance of information and communication technologies in modern society.
On the basis of this however, NCC states on its Facebook handle that “the Management and Staff of NCC celebrates and wishes a Happy World Telecommunications and Information Society Day to all consumers and stakeholders.
“This occasion also highlights one of NCC’s Strategic Focus Areas: “Bridging the Urban-Rural Digital Divide” which is a major goal in global telecommunications. The whole world needs digital innovation. Together we can make it happen.”
The theme of this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development.”
