On November 4, 2024, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by its Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, united to open the 2024 Judges Workshop in Lagos—a landmark event focused on steering Nigeria’s judiciary towards embracing the legal dynamics of digital transformation.
With the theme, “The Role of the Judiciary in Accelerating Digital Transformation in Nigeria,” the workshop zeroed in on vital topics such as telecom infrastructure protection, data security, and the judiciary’s adaptation to rapidly advancing technologies. Dr. Maida emphasized that safeguarding these elements is essential for a secure and progressive digital environment, while Justice Kekere-Ekun underscored the judiciary’s critical role in shaping Nigeria’s digital landscape. Their collaboration marks a significant step in fortifying Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure and empowering its legal system to respond to the demands of a digital era.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), highlighted the agency’s commitment to protecting telecom infrastructure, a vital foundation for Nigeria’s digital future. His remarks underscored the importance of the recent 2024 Executive Order from President Tinubu, which formally designates telecommunications assets as Critical National Information Infrastructure. This executive order not only strengthens the NCC’s mandate but also signals a national commitment to safeguarding these essential assets against threats. According to Dr. Maida, protecting telecom infrastructure isn’t just a regulatory responsibility—it’s a cornerstone for ensuring secure, resilient digital growth across Nigeria.
The new policy framework grants authorities robust powers to protect telecom infrastructure against vandalism, theft, and unauthorized access, with the judiciary playing a crucial role in enforcing these safeguards. By working hand-in-hand, the NCC and the judicial system can uphold these protections, ensuring that Nigeria’s digital backbone remains secure and resilient. This partnership underscores a comprehensive approach where legal and regulatory forces converge to shield critical telecommunications assets, essential for the country’s digital transformation.
“The ongoing Judges workshop will serve as a platform for the Commission to share insights into the workings of the Critical National Information Infrastructure Presidential Order, its significance, and the crucial role of the judiciary in bringing the Order’s provisions to life”, Dr Maida said.
Similarly, the Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun emphasized the judiciary’s evolving role in addressing the unique challenges of a technology-driven society, including complex cases like cybersecurity breaches and online banking fraud. She highlighted the judiciary’s dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy by ensuring fair and timely resolution of tech-related disputes. Recognizing the critical intersection between law and technology, Justice Kekere-Ekun underscored that justice must keep pace with innovation.
