For the first time in over 35 years, the physical appearance of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) is getting a significant upgrade. Since 1986, when the Hassan Wakili Adamu Library was inaugurated, the campus has maintained its original structure. However, this October marks a historic transformation with the unveiling of the Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre, a new storey-building that will serve as the institute’s gateway. This modern facility, located in Ogba, Lagos, will not only enhance the aesthetics of the nation’s premier monotechnic for Mass Communication but also symbolize a new era of growth and development for the institution.
The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) is entering a new chapter with the unveiling of the Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre, a modern building donated by philanthropist Chief Kesington Adebutu, also known as Baba Ijebu. This sleek, two-storey structure brings a fresh look to the campus, featuring a 350-seat lecture theatre on the ground floor, perfect for classes, seminars, and events. The open-plan first floor is designed to accommodate various academic needs, providing flexible space for students and staff. As the newest landmark at NIJ’s Ogba, Lagos campus, this resource center symbolizes growth and progress, marking a pivotal moment in the institute’s history.
“Today marks an epoch-making occasion,” proclaimed Mr. Lanre Ogundipe, a former president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and current council member of the NIJ Board. Speaking on behalf of Aremo Segun Osoba, the Board Chairman, Ogundipe made this statement during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre in June 2024. His words captured the significance of the moment as the institute took a bold step towards modernization, with the new facility set to transform the campus and enhance its reputation as the nation’s leading monotechnic for Mass Communication
Describing the donation as a significant boost to the advancement of journalism in Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Ogundipe expressed his excitement at seeing the project come to fruition. He noted that while many have made similar pledges in the past, few have followed through. “This donation is truly special,” he said, acknowledging the dedication and generosity of Chief Kesington Adebutu. Ogundipe’s remarks highlighted the importance of the Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre, not just as a new building but as a testament to the commitment to uplift journalism education in the country.
During his investiture as an NIJ Fellow in 2023, Chief Kesington Adebutu acknowledged that, despite the essential role journalists play in society, his foundation had not yet extended significant support to the profession. Determined to change that, he has now made a landmark contribution through the Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF). The new Resource Centre at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism marks the foundation’s first major ‘gift’ to journalism in Nigeria, symbolizing a commitment to enhancing the field and supporting the education of future media professionals.
Representing Chief Kesington Adebutu at the groundbreaking ceremony, Aare (Dr) Kola Oyefeso, an ambassador of the Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF), expressed his delight at seeing the long-anticipated project finally taking shape. Reflecting on the behind-the-scenes efforts, he assured guests and students gathered at the construction site that the project was fully secured. “This is a done deal,” he declared confidently. “Sir Adebutu doesn’t do anything halfway. The project is being financed 100% and will be completed 100%.” His words underscored the commitment and dedication behind the new Resource Centre, which promises to be a transformative addition to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
The Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre, now complete and ready for commissioning, stands as a testament to the swift and dedicated efforts behind its construction. During the groundbreaking ceremony, NIJ Provost Mr. Gbenga Adefaye expressed confidence that the project would not become an ‘abandoned dream.’ He shared that Chief Kesington Adebutu, fondly known as SKA, had assured its completion within four months—a promise that has now been fulfilled. The realization of this modern facility marks a historic moment during Adefaye’s tenure, symbolizing a new era for the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and its commitment to excellence in media education.
In conclusion however, the newly completed Kesington Adebutu Resource Centre, a stunning addition to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, is estimated to have cost over 250 million Naira. Beyond its financial value, the real reward for NIJ stakeholders is the visual transformation it brings to the campus. This modern edifice, with its sleek architecture and state-of-the-art facilities, has redefined the aerial view of the institution, marking the beginning of a new era. The building stands as a beacon of progress, reflecting the commitment to advancing journalism education in Nigeria. Welcome to the new NIJ.
