DURING an interview with The Punch, Mr. Matthew Oluwaniyi, who serves as the Chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife branch, discussed the tragic passing of Olabode Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist, who lost his life in an incident involving a lion at the OAU Zoological Garden.
When Oluwaniyi was talking about the death of his former colleague, he said that what brought about the solidarity march for the deceased was because of the initial press statement that was released by the university management, which almost trivialised his death.
Oluwaniyi said that what Olawuyi did was akin to what Jesus Christ did.
He said, “Mr Olawuyi died for a junior worker under him who was initially attacked. He took over to rescue the woman. As a matter of fact, immediately after the incident, and we confirmed that he was dead and nothing could be done again. We rushed to the health centre to check the woman that was attacked and she did not even know that her boss was dead.”
He continued by mentioning that it was then when someone entered and informed her about Mr. Olawuyi’s death caused by the lion that attacked her.
He mentioned, “Her surprise stemmed from recognizing Mr. Olawuyi as the one who saved her from the lion’s clutches.”
