The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command has a new Public Education Officer. She is Route Commander Olu Jayeola who is from Akunnu-Akoko. She is taking over from the erstwhile Superintendent Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi who is now heading the FRSC Drivers License Center, Ikeja, Lagos, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.
Â
The new Public Education Officer of FRSC Lagos Sector Command, Route Commander Olu Jayeola who hails from Akunnu Akoko in Ondo State was deployed from the Finance and Account department, FRSC Ondo Sector Command to the Public Education Unit of Lagos Sector Command as the new Public Education Officer at the RS 2.1 Lagos Sector Ojodu, Lagos.
Â
For Jayeola, the journey in Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is more of Public Education from her enlistment to date. Jayeola noted that she enjoys and relishes her unique role of enlightenment and education in the road safety agency. Only her recent stint to Finance and Account in Ondo state where she served in finance is different.
Â
Speaking of her aspirations in the new role in Lagos Sector Command, Route Commander Olu Jayeola told NAOSNP that ‘Part of my aspiration is to showcase Federal Road Safety Corp in the good light, propagate and enhance the visibility and credibility in a good way and engage more with the media and the community most especially so that we all know that our safety comes first on the road. Creating awareness about drug use and drinking has been on for a very long time, it’s not the job of the FRSC alone, it’s the job of everybody, the drivers themselves, the community that we belong to, our families, our parents, it’s the job of everybody. I have a plan of having a series of awareness programs with the drivers, community, community leaders, churches, mosques, and everybody so that we all carry ourselves along and we all showcase that we can actually eradicate the issue of drug abuse and drinking while driving.’
Â
‘The media has been of tremendous help. We are going to be meeting with the media personnel as time goes on so that we all can have a robust relationship.’
Â
She advised motorists to be calm as the ember months approaches. ‘If you open your eyes and you close it, you open it back, you’ll see that we are in ember month and we all know what ember month is, so from now till after ember month, I want us to have it at the back of our mind that our safety comes first whether you’re in the house or on the road, your safety has to come first, the person behind you, the person in front of you, you come first so you have to create that thing in your mind that as you’re going out you want to come back safely. I wish everybody a road crash free day.’
Â
On her predecessor, Route Commander Sonusi, she hailed: ‘She is the grandmother of public education officers. Some of us that came after her understudy her and she’s being the role model for many of us. It is a big shoe I’m filling and I pray that God gives me the grace to be able to fill it well.’
Â
Meanwhile, the immediate past Public Education Officer who has been recently redeployed as Head of the FRSC Drivers License Center, DLC, Ikeja Lagos, Supt. Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi has expressed her gratitude and excitement for her 14 years spent as the former PRO of Lagos Sector Command. Noting that in her tenure, FRSC Lagos witnessed significant development in public education and enlightenment and confident that, more is to come with the new person in charge.
Â
Supt Route Commande Olabisi Sonusi informed NAOSNP, ‘I took over the mantle of the sector public relations office in February 2010 and I left June 2024 that’s about 14 years that I have occupied the seat. I must say that there have been lot of challenges but, we are able to surmount them because we have very good stakeholders, especially our friends from the fourth realm, the press have been very supportive all through these years, they have been very supportive all the way. Rolling out all our activities, following up with all our activities and all what we have been doing has helped us in the course of 14 years.’
Â
‘The RS 2.1 Lagos sector command has been at the top of position nationwide back to back like 3 times and this was also made possible because of the relevant stakeholders that had helped us including members of the fourth realm.’
Â
Assuring Lagosians on the suitability of Route Commander Olu Jayeola to succeed her as Public Education Officer, Sonusi said that ‘the newly appointed person is a seasoned person I know even while she was far away. She has been understudying what we are doing in Lagos so I don’t see her not surmounting the pressure in Lagos. I see her going far beyond what we have done and when we were talking when she came in yesterday, I told her some of the success stories we have had. We have lot of radio stations that we give daily update to. We have some regular stations where we have our regular programs that we use in sensitizing the motoring public on the best road practice. Now that she’s onboard, I expect to see more radio stations coming onboard to partner with FRSC because you know road safety is a shared responsibility. If we have more radio station come onboard to still help us to propagate the gospel of road safety and it gets to every nook and cranny in Lagos that will be something I want her to do and to surpass what I have done. So I know she’s capable, I can assure that and I want to use this opportunity also to plead with everybody out there and to stakeholders who had been with us that the same support you have given to me Olabisi Sonusi, please extend same to her and other PROs in other sister agencies.’
‘I am only stepping aside, I am still on the stage, so you can always be rest assured that we will work together to make sure that we deliver and that every motoring public out there does not end up dying through road traffic crashes.’
