There’s currently a gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from Seven Up bus stop in Lagos State down to Kara Bridge in Ogun State caused by multiple accidents.
Our correspondent who visited the scene of the accident on Kara Bridge saw that it involved a truck conveying rolled steel coils and another truck hauling a container.
Some of the steel coils were seen scattered on the bridge, thereby disrupting the free flow of traffick, while the container being conveyed by one of the trucks was seen hanging by the side of the bridge.
The Lagos State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kehinde Hazmat, told our correspondent that there was an earlier accident on the bridge before the one involving the trucks.
Hazmat said the first accident involved a vehicle and resulted in the death of one person whose corpse has been deposited in the morgue by FRSC officials.
This was also confirmed by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, who said the deceased was a male driver.
Both Hazmat and Oke-Osanyintolu revealed that when their officials returned to the scene, they discovered that a truck, registration unknown laden with several rolls of coils of steel and a 40ft container without the truck head were found to have been involved in a road accident thereby completely obstructing vehicular movement at the aforementioned location.
Oke-Osanyintolu said, “LASEMA’s Response Team has activated necessary safety measures at the incident scene. Traffic control measures have been activated with road diversion in place.”
At the scene of the accidents, our correspondent saw officials of the FRSC, LASEMA, Nigeria Army, and the Traffic Compliance Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
A crane was also seen trying to lift the container from the road to enable free flow of traffick.
Meanwhile, commercial vehicles have taken advantage of the accident to hike transport fare. Magboro to Berger that normally costs N509 was hiked to N1,000 despite no gridlock on the side of the expressway inward Lagos.
Other commercial vehicles have totally abandoned the route, leaving many commuters heading to work stranded.
