In a bold stride toward health equity, the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) celebrated the 2024 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day with a vibrant Awareness Walk through the heart of Alausa, Ikeja. The event highlighted the importance of affordable healthcare under the state’s flagship health insurance scheme, Ilera Eko.
In a press release signed by the Director Public Affairs, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, it state that the walk, which began at LASHMA’s Headquarters at Good Shepherd House, saw participants navigating key landmarks, including the Public Service Office, Lagos State Ministry of Health, and the State House of Assembly. The spirited procession drew stakeholders from diverse sectors, underscoring a collective commitment to ensuring accessible healthcare for all Lagosians.
Addressing the participants, LASHMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to Universal Health Coverage. “December 12th is a global reminder of the importance of health for all. Through Ilera Eko, we are steadfast in our mission to provide quality, affordable healthcare to every resident of Lagos State,” she declared.
The event not only amplified awareness about Ilera Eko but also reinforced the government’s vision of a healthier, more equitable Lagos.
Dr. Zamba celebrated the agency’s key milestones, particularly the introduction of an equity fund designed to provide healthcare access to over 300,000 vulnerable residents. She explained, “We started the year by addressing misconceptions about health insurance through a media parley, followed by a series of activation initiatives. The equity fund, which draws 1% from Lagos State’s consolidated revenue, is now a model for sustainability, ensuring continuous financial support for vulnerable communities.”
She also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, calling him Lagos State’s UHC Brand Ambassador. “His executive order making health insurance mandatory is a testament to his commitment to universal health coverage. We are working tirelessly to guarantee that every Lagosian, regardless of their financial status, can access affordable, quality healthcare.”
Dr. Zamba announced that the agency would ramp up its public awareness efforts, utilizing various platforms to encourage Lagosians to enroll in Ilera Eko before enforcement begins next year. She emphasized, “Health insurance is a vital safety net, ensuring that you and your family can access care without the burden of financial strain. This message is central to our walk today and will continue to resonate in our outreach.”
Mrs. Adetoro Tayo-Adetoro, LASHMA’s Head of Planning, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, underscored the importance of the initiative, urging residents to embrace the Ilera Eko plans. “Health insurance is not just a necessity—it’s a gift of security. I encourage all Lagosians to invest in their health and the well-being of their loved ones by subscribing to our affordable plans,” she stated.
Mr. Rotimi Olatunji, LASHMA’s Head of Business Development, described the awareness walk as a powerful show of support for the global Universal Health Coverage (UHC) movement. He stated, “Ilera Eko is a legal framework designed to serve all Lagosians, from corporate professionals to artisans. It’s a proactive step to protect lives, ensuring no one faces financial ruin due to healthcare costs.”
Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, highlighted the inclusion of blood transfusion services within Ilera Eko. “Under this plan, residents, including those with sickle cell disorder, will have access to essential blood units, promoting equity in healthcare delivery. The government’s commitment to accessible healthcare is truly commendable,” she said.
Dr. Chidumga Ohazurike, Senior Health Specialist at USAID’s Local Health System Sustainability Project, praised Lagos State’s strides in UHC implementation. “We’ve seen the state’s dedication to equity funds and impactful policies. USAID is proud to be a partner in this transformative journey,” she remarked.
Mr. Biodun Omoloja, Head of the Global Fund Grant Management Unit, underscored the agency’s support for indigent populations. “Through partnerships and funding, we aim to place over 23,000 vulnerable individuals on health insurance, ensuring no one is left behind,” he shared.
King Ewa-Henshaw, Manager at the Solina Centre for International Development and Research, praised LASHMA’s efforts. “Universal health coverage is about equity and access. This walk demonstrates the government’s resolve to prioritize healthcare for all Lagosians,” he stated.
Conclusively, as the 2024 UHC Day Awareness Walk came to an end, there was a palpable sense of hope for the future of health insurance in Lagos. Participants were inspired to take part in the Ilera Eko initiative, which promises to provide comprehensive health coverage for all. The walk was more than just a symbolic event—it was a rallying cry for Lagosians to embrace a future where quality healthcare is accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
