Mohammed Aminu, the police officer who was assaulted by Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, has been promoted.
In May, Kuti was seen in a viral video assaulting the police officer, who, despite the provocation, did nothing in response.
Kuti was later detained and arraigned for assault, for which he claimed not guilty and was granted bail.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) said in a statement on Thursday that the officer had been promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
A statement by the PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said Aminu, in spite of the assault, exhibited a high level of professionalism.
“Inspector Mohammed Aminu, who trended on social Media where he was seen being assaulted in uniform by one Seun Kuti, was also promoted to ASP I,” Ani said.
At its ongoing 21st plenary meeting, the commission approved the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) and the promotion of the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, to the next rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
Ani disclosed that 9,016 unconfirmed Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) were confirmed, while the promotion of 14,052 inspectors to Assistant Superintendents of Police (unconfirmed) was also approved.
“One Inspector Habila Bulus was promoted to ASP II for his gallantry and commitment to duty,” Ani further stated.
It was revealed that Olalaye Falaye, former Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, was promoted to the next rank of Assistant Inspector General (AIG).
Speaking at the Valedictory session for the out going Commissioners of the Commission, Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, (IGP Rtd) who presided over the ceremony said they were worthy of celebration for standing tall and strong in the midst of obvious disquiet “which hitherto characterised the activities of the Commission and held the forte of the Commission down when it seemed it would disintegrate”.
Dr. Arase noted that the outgoing Commissioners jointly lifted and positioned the Commission where “it is today despite challenges and the characterising conflict between the Commission and the Nigeria Police Force”.
The Chairman noted that he will continue to reach out to them anytime the Commission comes in need of their expertise.
