Residents of Gbeganu community, a suburb of Minna, the capital of Niger State, have expressed concerns over the alleged activities of Yahoo boys in the area.
DAILY POST learnt their worries were a result of the spike in crime rate in the area.
The concerns were heightened following the renting of an apartment by some of the alleged Yahoo boys close to a building where a Boko Haram sect member was once arrested by security personnel in the area.
Most of the suspected Yahoo boys are said to be strange faces in the community.
According to members of the area who spoke with DAILY POST, some of the suspected Yahoo boys are most often seen with outlandish haircuts and earrings and only move in and out of the house they rented in the morning and evening hours.
“We have the feeling they are recruiting new members to be part of their criminal activities unhindered. We are, therefore, afraid, as we can still recall how a member of the Boko Haram sect was arrested in this area. And the house they rented, a former lodge, is not far from the house where the sect member was arrested,” one of the residents said.
Regarding the development, a resident of the area, Isah Mustapha, stressed the need for constant surveillance of their activities to rid the area of criminals.
He also called on the Niger State Government, the state police command and other security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Similarly, Aisha Abubakar, another resident, urged landlords to ensure they run checks as well as ask necessary questions before renting out their houses to avoid giving accommodation to people with questionable characters.
