A suspected robber, accused of terrorizing people living in Uyo metropolis, has been lynched after a failed robbery attempt at a popular boutique close to the Government House in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.
The deceased identified as Tempo was killed and his body dismembered before it was set ablaze.
It was learnt that the deceased, along with his syndicates, stormed the compound for their evil act but someone saw them and began to shout.
Sources disclosed that the deceased’s colleagues escaped leaving him behind, which made the youths of the area to mobilize and overpower him despite his charms.
“We were woken up by the shout of thief ooh, thief ooh, this early morning at about 4:30am.
“So, we immediately rallied the youths, who cooperated and stormed the compound.
“And while his colleagues fled, he was unlucky to be caught.
The youths tried to administer instant judgment on him, but machetes could not penetrate him.
It was after the boys chained his legs, cut some charms from his waist, that the cuts started piercing his body.
“Thereafter, his body was laced with petrol and set in fire.” a source disclosed.
Some female students of the nearby University of Uyo living around the area had overtime complained of being raped, with their phones, laptops and cash snatched.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Odiko Macdon has warned youths and vigilante groups against jungle justice, vowing to prosecute culprit in the habits of lynching criminal suspects in the State.
He said, “jungle justice has no place in the criminal justice system. Individuals have right to arrest criminal suspects, but must hand them over to the Police for diligent investigation and proper prosecution.”
