The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has initiated a two-day workshop for the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force, aimed at fostering human rights-based policing. The workshop, beginning on May 7th, 2024, signifies a proactive step towards building a more effective and efficient force, as reported by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Alabi Abiodun Sylvester, fdc, emphasized the importance of a new program aimed at enhancing police officers’ abilities in handling human rights and gender-sensitive issues. The program seeks to instill a culture of respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law among law enforcement personnel.

Similarly, the Nigeria Police through collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), seeks to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms, thereby ensuring that police operations are conducted with transparency, integrity, and respect for human rights. This is being achieved via a workshop, themed “Projects to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms of the Nigeria Police,” which commenced from the 7th and will run till the 9th of May, 2024, at the Bolton White Hotel, FCT, Abuja. It will bring together Complaint Response Unit (CRU) officers from various commands across the country.

The Inspector General of Police extends his appreciation to the UNODC for its support and collaboration in organizing this important training program. He equally emphasizes that this initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating a Police that upholds the rule of law, safeguards human rights, and enhances public trust and confidence.
