Dr. Abdulmumini Alao, a seasoned sports thespian and communication expert, has been appointed President of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA). His election was announced at the conclusion of the association’s 35th Annual General Meeting, held on Sunday.
With a distinguished career in sports and media, Dr. Alao brings a wealth of experience and dynamic leadership to the role. The 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) took place at Hall 36 of the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos. The event saw a vibrant turnout, with members dressed in a variety of colorful and elegant attires, adding to the lively atmosphere. The gathering was not just a formal affair but a celebration of camaraderie and unity, as alumni from different walks of life came together to reconnect, discuss future projects, and elect new leaders. The event underscored UMA’s commitment to fostering a sense of community and shared purpose among its members.
Dr. Abdulmumini Alao succeeds Prof. Khalid Adekoya as the new President of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA). Prof. Adekoya, who led the organization for the past two years, was praised for his dedication and impactful leadership, guiding the alumni association through a period of growth and strengthened connections. As Dr. Alao steps into this role, he carries forward a legacy of progress, aiming to build on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor and drive UMA towards new achievements.
Following the report by the Shurah Committee, chaired by Prof. Lukman Adams, Dr. Abdulmumini Alao, Managing Director of Complete Sports, was officially named the new President of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA). Dr. Alao, who was chosen to lead the association for the next two years, will be at the helm of driving its initiatives and fostering greater unity among members. The announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter for UMA, as Dr. Alao’s expertise in sports management and communication is expected to bring fresh energy and direction to the organization.
Although unable to attend the AGM in person due to a national assignment outside Lagos State, Dr. Abdulmumini Alao actively participated online and was visibly delighted when his name was announced as the new President of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA). Despite the distance, Dr. Alao’s presence was felt throughout the event, as he engaged with members and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the illustrious alumni association. His election signals a new era of leadership, as he prepares to bring his unique vision and experience to the helm of UMA.
Dr Alao promised to work assiduously in promoting the cardinal objectives of the association and lead in front.
Alao said innovation and strategic ideas will be injected into the association as he affirmed that the membership drive of the association will be vigorously pursued.
Giving the acceptance speech on his behalf, Deputy President iii of the association, Alhaja Muhidat Kemi Bello said the executives have accepted to serve the association and would do their best in proper positioning and membership drive with injection of innovative ideas.
The immediate past president of the association, Prof Adekoya who gave an account of his stewardship assured the new executive members of adequate support and offered useful ideas as to how to rightly steer the affairs of the alumni.
Prof Adekoya said during his tenure as President, the alumni was able to sponsor no fewer than 200 students with 37 on scholarship for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
He also disclosed that the association is close to commencing the adopt a hostel programme where the association would be able to renovate and manage a hostel for the use of the students in the institution.
He said; “Our scholarship scheme has been a progressive one. Our scholars are fast becoming role models in the university system as some have reached professorial cadres in their field of endeavours. Our beneficiaries are close to 200 including 37 in the outgoing year. We now have more Ph.D.s that are awarded graduating both in Nigeria and diaspora.”
Other members of the newly sworn-in executives include Alhaji Muhammad Salam, Deputy President I; Prof Habeeb Tijani, Deputy President II; Alhaja Muhidat Kemi Bello Deputy President III; Prof Shakirudeen Odunuga, Vice President I; General Secretary, Alhaji Tajudeen Adebanjo; Assistant General Secretary, Abdulhakeem Qasim; Public Relations I, Dr Ganiyat Adenle-Tijani and Public Relations officer II, Alhaja Zainab Shogbesan.
Alongside the appointment of Dr. Abdulmumini Alao as President, the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) also unveiled a diverse and capable team of executives. Abdulkabir Taiwo Kuye was named Financial Secretary, responsible for managing the association’s finances. Alhaji Muftau Tijani took on the role of Treasurer, while Babatunde Yusuf was appointed as Internal Auditor, ensuring transparency and accountability. Prof. Taofeeqah Adesalu will oversee member support and outreach as Welfare Officer I, and Mr. Sofiyullah Oladipo has been entrusted with legal matters as the association’s Legal Officer. Together, this team is set to steer UMA towards continued growth and success, fostering unity and collaboration among its members.
