She was differently created by God and abled lady simply identified as Mariam who narrated her experience growing up in a society where people wanted to kill her because she was born with limbs.
In an exclusive interview with Afrimax Television, Mariam disclosed that while growing up, she was targeted by people in the society, as they attempted to end her life because she was different from the rest of them and thus prompted more or less like a fear to them.
Mariam said in a bid to protect her from the society, she was kept in the hospital where she was born until she clocked three years old. She said her mother already knew she was not going to be accepted in the society, so she was kept for 3 years after she was born.
After leaving the hospital, Mariam said she lived at her grandfather’s place where people would always come to see her as they were stunned to see a kid without limbs. She said some advised her mother to throw her into the river, while others suggested she should be thrown in to the forest.
Recounting her ugly experience of how she was nearly killed, Mariam said while her mother was crossing a river, she was pushed into the water by people who wanted her dead. She said the intention was for her and her mother to drown inside the water. Luckily, she said her mother was able to swim her way out of the water.
She said growing up in the society where people wanted to put an end to her life because of the way she was born was difficult. Mariam said she never knew her biological father while all these were happening as her mother revealed that she only met the man once and got pregnant for him.
She said amidst the rigors and harshness, her mother and her grandfather did their best to help her survive and have a good life. She recounted how her biological father once came and asked to take her but her grandfather refused as he believed he had sinister intentions towards her.
Mariam said her mother got married and took her to her new husband’s house. Unluckily for her, she said her step-father didn’t welcome her as he would always torture her and call her abusive names. She said living with her step-father was unpalatable, so her mother took her away.
She was then taken to a boarding school for children with special needs where she eventually met others like her. Whenever they had vacation and she needed to go home, Mariam said she would sit in front of her school’s gate and beg people for money because she knew her stepdad would starve her.
Mariam eventually finished her primary and secondary education. She said she managed to go to college as well and she met kind-hearted people who often assist her.
Speaking on how she copes without limbs, Mariam said she uses her feet to do most of her daily activities. She said she washes, writes, and wears make-up with her feet.
Mariam said she became friends with a young man who saved her life when her house was on fire. She said they became close and she got pregnant for the man. However, he left her when she refused to abort her pregnancy.
