The Delta State Police Command has apprehended members of a notorious “one-chance” syndicate accused of robbing and assaulting women across the state, according to Punch Newspaper. The suspects, whose activities had caused fear among commuters, were presented to the public on Tuesday by the police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, at the Ughele A Division.
One of the arrested suspects, identified as Vincent, confessed to the gang’s methods during an interview. He explained that they posed as transport service providers to lure unsuspecting women. “We pretend to be transporters and look for vulnerable young women. Once they board, another gang member joins, and we take them to secluded areas. We steal their phones, transfer money from their apps, and sometimes assault them,” Vincent admitted.
He also revealed that the syndicate specifically targeted women, perceiving them as less likely to resist or pose a challenge. “We focus on women because they’re easier to handle compared to men,” he added. His confession has shed light on the gang’s operations, which have been a significant concern for residents of Delta State.
One of the gang’s victims was reportedly present at the police station but was too scared to provide a statement. Addressing this, Vincent remarked, “One of the victims is here, but she’s afraid and doesn’t want to talk. We can’t force her.” The police have assured the public that the victim’s identity will be protected and that her safety is a priority.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime and safeguarding residents. Edafe highlighted that these arrests were part of broader efforts to curb criminal activities in the state. “This operation underscores our dedication to protecting citizens, especially women who have been the primary targets of this group,” he stated.
As investigations continue, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant when using public transportation and to report any suspicious activity. They also assured that the suspects would face justice, serving as a warning to others considering similar crimes.
Hear him speak: “They operate in two dimensions. One is that they pretend like they are transporters, look for vulnerable young girls. They don’t target men. They target young girls. Pretend like they want to carry them. They will carry them as passengers. When they get to about 100 metres away, another of their gang members will be waiting. They will now enter and they will now put the lady in their middle, drive them to a lonely road, at times to the bush, collect their phone, enter their mobile app, transfer all the money they have, collect their phones. At times, they will rape these ladies
