The operatives from the Oyo State Police Command, have successfully apprehended five suspects in connection with the murder of a retired permanent secretary in the state civil service, Mrs. Olaitan Gbenle.
According to The Punch, it was reported that thirty other suspects were paraded and detained for various criminal offenses. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat, disclosed these arrests during a press briefing held at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.
According to the information that was shared via the command’s X account on Wednesday, the suspected perpetrators of Gbenle’s murder allegedly strangled her to death, after robbing her of valuable possessions. Police reports indicate that the suspects confessed to the crime voluntarily.
The statement further stated that the leader of the gang confessed to the murder, revealing that Gbenle was killed because she recognized him during the robbery. He also admitted to his involvement in multiple robbery operations.
He reportedly said in his confession statement that, “This is my second time taking part in robbery operation. I lived in the same neighbourhood as the deceased in Apata area of Ibadan.
“We strangled her to death, knowing fully well that she recognised me during the operation as one of her neighbours. The fear of possible arrest by the security operatives made us take the decision
