In this narrative of redemption, the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) serves as a conduit for truth, dismantling misconceptions and heralding a new era of appreciation for the indomitable spirit of Nigeria’s senior police officers. Theirs is a story of resilience, fortitude, and unwavering commitment to the noble cause of safeguarding the nation’s security and fostering a society built on justice and equity.

In the dimly lit briefing room, officers huddle around a table strewn with maps and intel reports. Their minds buzz with anticipation as they meticulously craft their strategy, each move calculated to outmaneuver the shadows of crime lurking in the city’s alleys. With precision and determination, they set their sights on dismantling the web of criminality, determined to bring light to the darkest corners of society.

In a swift transition orchestrated by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, the helm of the Alausa division in Ikeja welcomed a new steward less than three months ago. Stepping into the role of Divisional Police Officer (DPO) with determination and vision, CSP Tokunbo Abaniwonda wasted no time in rallying her team for a strategic discussion

Gathered within the precincts of their jurisdiction, a lively exchange ensued as CSP Abaniwonda led her officers in a comprehensive analysis of the landscape before them. With Alausa boasting a rich tapestry of government edifices, including the Governor’s office, the State House of Assembly, and the Secretariat, alongside vital hubs like the Lagos State

Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) office and the bustling Ikeja City Mall, the stakes were high.

Amidst the hum of deliberation, CSP Abaniwonda’s approach was both collaborative and forward-thinking. Together, they dissected real and perceived trouble spots, identifying areas ripe for proactive policing initiatives.

Through shared insights and expertise, the team forged a unified strategy aimed at safeguarding the community they proudly served.

Embracing the ethos of constructive engagement, CSP Abaniwonda instilled a sense of purpose and pride within her officers, reaffirming their collective commitment to uphold peace and security within the vibrant heart of Alausa. With a renewed sense of purpose, they stood ready to navigate the challenges ahead, ensuring that safety remained paramount in their noble endeavor.

Armed with a thorough dossier on the Alausa police division, she skillfully pinpointed the epicenter of criminal activity in the area. Among the myriad of concerns, the Otedola bridge emerged as a glaring hotspot, casting its shadow over the surrounding landscape.

Otedola Bridge, once a bustling thoroughfare, now echoes with tales of caution and trepidation for Lagosians and weary travelers alike. Its name evokes a tapestry of somber narratives, woven with threads of road mishaps, fiery spectacles, and the shadowy menace of crime. Once a lifeline for commuters, it now stands as a forsaken passage, abandoned by those who seek safer harbors for their journeys. Whether under the harsh gaze of the sun or the cloak of night, Otedola Bridge remains a symbol of caution, a chapter etched in the annals of Lagosian lore.

In a strategic move to lure out the elusive criminals haunting Otedola Bridge, she meticulously crafted a simulated crime scene, weaving a tapestry of clues to entice them from their shadows. With precision and foresight, she orchestrated each detail, knowing the patterns of their escape routes all too well. As night draped its cloak over the bridge, she waited with bated breath, her heart echoing the rhythm of anticipation. And sure enough, like moths to a flame, the criminals emerged, drawn by the illusion she had masterfully crafted. They prowled towards the canal, their usual refuge, unaware that the trap had been set. With nerves of steel, she watched as they fell into her carefully laid snare, their fate sealed by her ingenuity. And as dawn broke, the abandoned building stood silent witness, its weeds whispering secrets of a night where justice prevailed over darkness.

On the fateful day of April 9th, 2024, CSP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, the fearless leader of Alausa Division, embarked on a mission akin to a brave lion entering the heart of the jungle. With determination etched on her face, she traversed the treacherous paths of Otedola Bridge, undeterred by the looming dangers that lay ahead.

As she delved deeper into the fray, the chaos intensified around her. Yet, like a beacon of hope amidst the storm, she pressed forward, her resolve unshakable. With each step, she faced adversaries head-on, confronting the challenges with a tenacity that could not be matched.

Despite sustaining injuries along the way, CSP Abaniwonda remained steadfast in her pursuit of justice. Her unwavering commitment to duty propelled her forward, driving her to achieve her objective with an unwavering sense of purpose.

In the end, amidst the chaos and turmoil, she emerged victorious, a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to the task at hand. CSP Abaniwonda’s courageous actions serve as a reminder that in the face of adversity, true heroes rise to the occasion, ensuring that justice prevails no matter the cost.

In a bold move, she became the mastermind behind a unique sting operation. She orchestrated a scenario where a commercial bus, disguised with female officers in plain clothes, journeyed to Otedola bridge. As the bus “broke down,” she seamlessly slipped into action, pretending to seek assistance while covertly signaling for backup with her phone. It was a daring game of cat and mouse, with her as the cunning bait luring in unsuspecting criminals.

As the clock ticked away, the trio emerged stealthily from their concealment, their resolve unwavering as they converged on their target: her phone. With precision born of careful planning, they pounced, executing their scheme with a singular focus.

As she covertly signaled for backup, a patrol van of vigilant officers lurked nearby, ready to pounce at the right moment. With strategic finesse, she lured the trio into a trap, poised to intervene once she initiated the signal. However, an unforeseen delay in the officers’ response emboldened the assailants, leading to a harrowing showdown. In the chaotic clash, she valiantly defended herself but was outnumbered, falling prey to the ruthless onslaught. Despite the setback, her quick thinking and resilience spurred the authorities into action, launching a relentless pursuit to apprehend the perpetrators and recover her stolen phone, lost in the labyrinthine canal beneath the iconic Otedola bridge.

Despite the searing pain in her neck and blood trickling down her skin, she refused to relent, driving her team forward in hot pursuit of the criminals weaving through the labyrinthine canal. With unwavering determination, they pressed on until they reached the vibrant chaos of Fela Shrine, where the pulsating rhythm of the music masked the urgency of their mission. Amidst the sea of revelers, they uncovered crucial clues that propelled them onward, their relentless pursuit leading them to the outskirts of Akute in Ogun state. Unfazed by the challenges, they zeroed in on their target, discovering the elusive criminals nestled within the confines of a hotel, their refuge shrouded in the guise of luxury.

At the bustling Fela Shrine, a key lead emerged from the shadows—a woman with a past intertwined with the leader of a notorious criminal gang. Under the steady gaze of CSP Abaniwonda, she unraveled the tangled web of deceit, confessing to her former lover’s penchant for flaunting his illicit gains on Facebook after each triumphant escapade at Otedola bridge. Armed with this revelation, the determined DPO embarked on a digital manhunt, scouring through the vast expanse of social media until the face of the phone-snatching culprit emerged from the digital abyss.

In a dramatic turn of events, the young woman found herself caught in the whirlwind of her boyfriend’s misdeeds. As the authorities closed in on their clandestine hideout, she found herself pleading for a chance at redemption.

With tears streaming down her face, she implored the police for mercy, her voice trembling with regret and desperation. “I long to return to the embrace of my family,” she cried, realizing the harsh reality of street life. “I urge all young women to heed my warning: the streets offer only fleeting illusions of freedom. It’s in the warmth of family where true security and love reside.”

Her heartfelt plea echoed through the corridors of the police station, a poignant reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows of urban life. As she awaited her fate, she resolved to turn her life around and become a beacon of hope for others trapped in the same cycle of despair.

For three relentless days, CSP Abaniwonda pursued the criminals with unwavering determination, refusing to return home or rely on tracking technology. Their hunt led them through numerous hotels, known haunts of the criminal underworld. Guided by snippets of evidence gleaned from the gang leader’s audacious Facebook posts, particularly those uploaded by the infamous Nonso, alias Thuglife, the police team closed in on their elusive prey. Finally, in a dramatic climax, they burst into a hotel room, the very one immortalized in Nonso’s brazen social media videos. There, amidst a tense standoff, justice prevailed, marking a triumph for CSP Abaniwonda and the tireless pursuit of law and order.

One of the criminals, Richard Etim told NAOSNP, ‘I am homeless. I stay in a hotel in Akute. We don’t have gun, we only use machetes but we don’t use it to kill. We only use it to injure.’

‘I just joined one month ago. I used to work as a dispatch rider owned by a single lady who got married and traveled out with her Lebanese husband. That is how I lost my job.’

‘My expectant wife stays in Ijebu ode. The little money I have been getting ranges from N15,000 to N40,000. I got one phone which I sold to rent the house in Ijebu ode where my wife stays.’

In the quiet hush of a candlelit vigil, a pastor’s words danced in the air, wrapping around a man and his wife like a gentle embrace. “Turn away from the shadows of crime,” the pastor urged, his voice a beacon of hope in the dim room. Beside him, his wife’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears, her hands cradling the promise of new life within her. “For our child’s sake,” she whispered, her plea a melody of love and faith. “God will guide us, provide for us, if only you choose the path of righteousness.” And in that moment, amidst the flickering flames and the warmth of his wife’s touch, the man felt the stirrings of a new beginning, a chance to rewrite the story of his life in the ink of redemption.

Richard Etim, blind to the cautionary whispers and desperate pleas, danced along the edge of fate until the police ensnared him in their web of consequences.

The second member of the gang, Chidera Christopher, 25 who hails from Nsukka, Enugu revealed to NAOSNP. ‘I used to learn POP from some Cotonou boys but when they traveled home, I didn’t have any other thing to do. Places that I go to seek jobs, they ask for guarantors and I don’t have any. I have only one sister who is still in the village after our parents died.’

The 25year old added: ‘On the day that the DPO was attacked, I was the one who picked the Samsung phone and ran with it and Thuglife collected it later. When he saw that it is police phone, he was afraid but when he finally sold the phone, he gave me N5,000. I am praying for God’s mercy, I know what I did is wrong.’

The gang leader, Tochuckwu Nonso a.k.a. ‘Thug life’, 29 who destroys people’s lives and goes on Facebook to flaunt it was also interviewed by NAOSNP. ‘I sing so my stage name is Thuglife. I don’t have car, house, anything. I have my wife and children in Ikorodu. I usually lie to my wife that I just hustle for my daily living. There are many gangs that come to Otedola bridge, some use bikes. Eze, yellow Warri, Cameroon are the ones who introduced me into this.’

‘I don’t kill, I have never killed. What we do is attack people who are walking late at night around the bridge or sometimes when vehicles park accidentally. Some nights we get up to four (4) phones and cash.’

In the bustling heart of Lagos, a torrential tide of 88 newcomers surges in every minute, each with a tale as varied as the city’s skyline. Yet, many among them find themselves ensnared in the labyrinthine alleys of survival. Some, driven by desperation, succumb to the siren call of illicit deeds—pickpocketing, kidnapping, and thievery becoming their clandestine trades. Others, grappling with the cacophony of urban life, find solace in the shadows of societal vices—begging for alms, prostitution, or seeking refuge in the numbing embrace of drug addiction. Amidst the throng of transient souls, the city weaves its narrative, a kaleidoscope of dreams shattered and destinies entwined in the crucible of Lagos’s unforgiving embrace.

In the bustling heart of Nigeria’s economic pulse, amid the rhythm of commerce and the promise of progress, lies a narrative of resilience and adaptation. As the day fades into dusk, individuals from all walks of life find solace in unconventional sanctuaries: beneath bridges, atop counters, nestled on curbs, or perched on bicycles.

Their nightly rituals unfold against a backdrop of urban complexity, where the pulse of a metropolis is felt in the ebb and flow of human activity. Bathing under the open sky and seeking refuge in the shelter of unfinished structures, they carve out spaces of belonging amidst the concrete jungle.

Yet, amidst this ingenuity lies a pressing reality – the challenge of sanitation and environmental stewardship. Along the arteries of commerce, such as the venerable Lagos-Ibadan expressway, a tapestry of debris paints a stark portrait of neglect.

However, within this narrative lies opportunity – an opportunity for collective action and transformative change. Through community-driven initiatives and innovative solutions, the canvas of Nigeria’s commercial epicenter can be adorned with the hues of cleanliness and sustainability.

In the tapestry of urban life, let us weave threads of progress and hope, ensuring that every corner of our city reflects the aspirations of a nation destined for greatness.

Why is it difficult for persons who embark on rural-urban migration to return to their hometowns instead of taking to crimes or constituting nuisance? The African community system, though depleting, still works for us as Africans, these youths can find something worthwhile to do in their respective hometowns and still enjoy family support. They can trade, they can farm, they can learn a skill, everything that is possible in Lagos is possible elsewhere.

In Nigeria, the call for societal reevaluation echoes loudly. The pulse of change beats in the hearts of our youth, urging them to reconsider their paths. No longer tethered to the notion that success only dwells in the bustling streets of Lagos, they are awakening to the truth that prosperity blooms in the soil of their hometowns too. Gone are the days of ceaseless wanderings in search of fortune, for they realize that the key to triumph lies within their grasp, waiting to be unlocked through diligence and perseverance. No longer shackled by the chains of social media’s illusions, they find liberation in authenticity, knowing that true fulfillment springs not from fleeting likes and followers, but from genuine connections and accomplishments.

In the tale of CSP Tokunbo Abaniwonda’s heroic endeavors at Alausa Division, Lagos State Command, a symphony of collaboration emerged. Parents became guardians of virtue, teachers illuminated paths of righteousness, and religious leaders preached harmony. Traditional rulers stood as beacons of integrity, while media practitioners broadcasted tales of valor. Police and security agencies orchestrated a dance of justice, led by the indomitable CP Adegoke Fayoade. Together, they painted a portrait of unity and resolve, turning the tide against the criminal gang of three.
