A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Ibere, Abia State, for forcefully sleeping with a 5-year-old girl in a building.

The culprit was beaten by an angry mob that caught him in the act, while he confessed to having sexual intercourse with the minor, stating that he lured the girl with groundnuts.

He begged the villagers for mercy and claimed that he was used by the devil to commit this heinous act, stating that the cold weather from the rain had heightened his desires.

It was gathered that the culprit was sitting with some friends, eating groundnuts, when he later entered the building to get something.

He stated that upon entering the building, he saw the child and offered her some groundnuts, after which she followed him inside, where he assaulted her.

Meanwhile, the man further stated that he attempted to be gentle with the child during this despicable act.

According to a source, the sexually assaulted child had been rushed to the hospital by her family for immediate medical attention. Adding that the rapist has been handed over to local security personnel for subsequent transfer to the police, who would conduct a proper investigation.

The incident occurred barely four months after a 37-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison in Umuahia for raping a 4-year-old girl while on October 30, the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos revealed how a man defiled his 12-year-old daughter.

The state prosecuting counsel, Olushola Sholeye, told the court that the minor was defiled in the Badagry area of the state.

The witness further told the court who presided over the case that it was the defendant’s son, who caught his father in the act and raised the alarm.

Consequently, Justice Abiola Soladoye adjourned the case till December 16, for continuation of trial.

Meanwhile, the defendant was arraigned on June 3, 2021, on a count of unlawful defilement of a child preferred against him by the state.

According to the prosecutor, the offense committed contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
