Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, has alleged that Bola Tinubu had to ‘fight his way through’ to become the presidential candidate of the APC after Lawal declared that the then-President Muhammadu Buhari had chosen him (Lawal) as his preferred successor.
Chief Adebanjo made this statement during an interview with The Punch. He said before the elections, he warned Tinubu that Buhari was deceiving him about supporting his presidential ambition
In Chief Adebanjo’s words: “I warned Tinubu in my room that Buhari was deceiving him about supporting him for the presidency. Right now, his conscience will be telling him whether what I told him is correct or not. Even from what you could see in the primaries of the APC, did Buhari support Tinubu?
“Buhari said ‘you governors choose your successors now let me choose mine’ and they were fighting over the question of Buhari’s preferred candidate until when Lawal said Buhari had chosen him, Tinubu fought his way through”.
